Seeing as it’s my 100th post…

I thought I would recommend to you, my lovely followers the film below… Leaves of Grass.

It’s due to be released on blu-ray/dvd in October and I will tell you this… it’s one you do not want to miss.

First of all, the man shaped acting genius, Edward Norton stars in not one but two roles, two roles that could not be any more different.

He plays twins, Brady and Bill who have very different lives. Brady has remained in his small home town of Oklahoma to be a pot growing genius whilst Bill has moved to New England and is an extremely well regarded professor of classical philosophy.

Tricked into returning home and embroiled in Brady’s life of trouble caused by his drug dealer status Bills perfect and organised life is thrown into chaos, but in the chaos he finds himself to be unexpectadly happy.

I won’t say anymore as I don’t want to ruin the story for anyone but this is a smart witty and most importantly an original movie.

Edward Norton is phenominal as are the cast that surround him.

YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!

Modern Classics - American History X

Dir. Tony Kaye

1998

This brilliant piece of cinema has stayed with me from my first viewing. I have watched it countless times despite the harrowing and tragic elements of the story the film is brilliantly executed and has an amazing cast a moral tale that will leave anyone that watches it stunned.

The story charts the life of Skinhead gang leader Derek Vineyard on his release from prison after murdering 3 black men for breaking into his truck. We chart Derek’s life in prison, how his radical views have been developed, how they change and the difficulties he faces in realigning his younger brothers skewed admiration for him.

Edward Norton takes the lead role and I personally will always believe this has to date been his greatest performance.

The story is told with an intimacy that allows you to get into each of the characters heads and understand their motivations for the things they do. The on screen relationship between Derek (Norton) and his younger brother Danny (Edward Furlong) will keep you from blinking as you share their fears and frustrations.

A real tale of moral evolution, bad influence and the naivety of youth this one is not always an easy watch (The kerb scene still makes me shudder) that said it is a brilliant film. The standout scene for me has always been Nortons frustration boiling over aidied by his girlfriend (Fairuza Balk) and leading to a devastating family fight.

This film tackles a series of highly sensitive issue and provides and intelligent, balanced view of gang life for lost disillusioned youngsters.

As with all of these Modern Classics if you haven’t seen this do. I may have said it about the others but if I had to pick just one movie I recommend you see I’d say it’s this one.
