The new Godzilla movie is underway and into production as it started filming this week.

Gareth Edwards, who made his name with the indie sci-fi film “Monsters,” is directing the latest latest outing for the famous Japanese Kaiju and will be looking to kickstart the franchise with a fresh new approach.

The film looks to be in goods hands too with Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption & Walking Dead) and David Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) taking on te writing duties writing duties.

The cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Ken Watanabe (Inception, Batman Begins) and David Strathairn (Alphas).

With little to go on at this stage I think we can expect elements of what we have seen more recently in ‘Cloverfield’ and with Gareth Edwards own ‘Monsters’ with a focus on impressive visuals and a character driven drama. Due to the disappointing 1998 effort I’m sure that the production team won’t be making the same mistakes again. With the potential to take Godzilla back to his 1954 roots, these really are exciting times. Watch this space.

The 3D film is scheduled to open May 2014.
